ASHOK PANCHABAKESAN

The Architect Who Makes Law Firms Think Like Tech Companies

CTO. Builder. Hackathon warrior. Ashok Srinivasan Panchabakesan has spent decades doing the thing most people are too intimidated to attempt: making enterprise-scale technology feel inevitable. He didn't just build systems — he built the thinking behind them.

The Man Who Learned to Draw Blueprints for the Digital Age

From financial services giant to legal-tech disruptor — the journey of a Principal Platform Architect who never stopped asking "but what's underneath?"

Some people find their calling. Ashok Panchabakesan built his, floor by floor, function by function. As a Principal Consultant and Platform Architect with over two decades of enterprise-scale experience, he is the rare professional who genuinely enjoys the part of technology that most people find terrifying: the architecture underneath it all.

Based in the United Kingdom and currently serving as Chief Technical Officer at Legalytics, Ashok has carved a niche at the intersection of two worlds that are only beginning to understand each other — law and technology. His story is one of deliberate expertise, stubborn curiosity, and a willingness to take complexity head-on while making the solution look obvious in hindsight.

His path includes a significant stint in financial services — colleagues from his time at Mellon remember him as the person who always got things done under pressure, and who "always wants to carefully understand the problem" before diving in. That's not just work ethic. That's a philosophy.

🚀 ACT III: THE CTO
Builds tools that make compliance, analytics & AI accessible to legal professionals.

Legalytics: Where Law Firms Finally Get the Tech They Deserve

Co-founded in 2017. Registered in London. On a mission to make legal data an asset, not a burden.

Legalytics was incorporated on 23 November 2017 and registered at 20-22 Wenlock Road, London N1 7GU — an address that has become something of a launchpad for legal innovation in the UK. The company also has a MENA presence, with operations extending to Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The premise is deceptively simple: law firms are generating massive amounts of data — billing records, time entries, client files, compliance logs — and most of them are still drowning in it. Legalytics built the infrastructure to turn that flood into a river they can actually navigate.

Ashok, as CTO, oversees a suite of solutions: Master Data Management, Enterprise Data Warehousing, AI Solutions, Analytics & Visualisation, iManage Integration, and proprietary products like the Legalytics Client Portal and Indikator. The technology stack spans Microsoft Azure, AWS, Power BI, Boomi, SAP, Thomson Reuters Elite, and Intapp — the tools that power the legal industry's most demanding environments.

On the UK Government's Digital Marketplace, Ashok is listed as the point of contact for Legalytics' cloud computing services — hybrid cloud migration, application development, and cloud testing. He's not just the CTO who oversees the strategy; he's the person you actually call.

The Hackathon that Put Legalytics on the Map

In February 2018, teams from Oxford, Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, and the Law Society descended on London for the Global Legal Hackathon — billed as the world's largest legal hackathon. Ashok joined his Legalytics teammates Murtaza Amirali, Dr. Mehmood Hassan, and Mohamed Sajeed Hameed to build something ambitious: a centralised legal data analysis system covering billing, time, indexing, and work location data — and making the whole thing GDPR-compliant in 48 hours. They weren't just building software. They were proving a thesis: that the legal industry had a data problem, and they knew how to fix it.

"Ashok is super smart and very nice to work with. He has a really nice manner and always wants to carefully understand the problem and work very hard to get a good quality result."
— Former colleague, Mellon Financial

Super Smart. Very Nice. Gets the Job Done.

What three people said about Ashok in public. What that actually means in the real world.

There's a particular compliment that architects earn when they've spent long enough in the trenches: people trust them. Not just with code. With strategy. With the messy, ambiguous, high-stakes decisions that organisations make when they're trying to transform themselves.

Ashok has collected this kind of trust repeatedly. His colleagues describe him as "highly professional and knowledgeable" with an in-depth understanding of Enterprise Architecture that "always ensured a solution fit for purpose would be provided." That phrasing — fit for purpose — is key. It's not about the most elegant solution, or the most technically impressive one. It's about the one that actually works for the business.

This is the rare quality that separates architects from technologists. Anyone can design a beautiful system on paper. Ashok designs systems that survive contact with reality.

He brings that same careful, deliberate approach to Legalytics — a firm that prides itself on a Challenger Mentality, curiosity, clarity of purpose, and a bias toward action. Those aren't just company values. They read like Ashok's professional biography.

★ A MOMENT JUST FOR ASHOK ★

Hey, Ashok. Someone who has spent years making complexity invisible for others deserves to have their own story told simply. You're the person colleagues remember — not for the slides, not for the architecture diagrams, but because when things got intense, you were the one they trusted. That's not a job title. That's a reputation. And it's been earned one carefully understood problem at a time. The legal industry is finally waking up to what you've known for years: that data, done right, is the difference between a law firm that survives and one that leads. You're not just building software. You're building the future of a profession. They just haven't all caught up yet.
