# Community Software Landscape: Open Social and CMNTY

> Two Dutch software companies both sell what they call a community platform, yet they solve opposite problems. Open Social, funded by the Amsterdam and Enschede agency GoalGorilla, is an open-source distribution built on Drupal that lets NGOs, governments and associations run a branded, member-owned network they host and control. CMNTY, founded in 2007 and now part of MarketResponse, is a SaaS insight-community tool that packages surveys, digital journals, discussion boards and video focus groups so marketers can turn a crowd's opinions into research. Same word, two businesses: one is about belonging and organizing, the other is about listening and extracting insight.

## Achievements

- Open Social is used by prominent NGOs and (semi-)governmental organizations to run branded, self-hosted member networks.
- Open Social is offered as a free open-source Drupal distribution alongside a maintained SaaS and an enterprise edition.
- CMNTY combines qualitative and quantitative research - surveys, digital journals, discussion boards, IDIs and video focus groups - into a single platform.
- CMNTY grew from a Dutch startup into a global SaaS provider with a New York office before its acquisition by MarketResponse.

## Latest updates

- **2021-04** — goalgorilla/open_social renamed to drupal/social on Drupal.org.
- **2021-01** — CMNTY acquired by MarketResponse and rebranded as CMNTY by MarketResponse, operating from Utrecht, Amsterdam and New York.
