# Harmony

> Harmony is a Mountain View technology company founded in 2017 that built an Ethereum-compatible, sharded proof-of-stake blockchain for low-cost decentralized applications. After the roughly $100 million Horizon bridge theft in 2022 and another exploit in August 2026, the team proposed retiring its Layer 1 network and migrating ONE to Ethereum. Its current public positioning centers on an AI video remix economy; the migration and commercial ambitions should be treated as proposals rather than completed outcomes.

- **Founded:** 2017
- **Headquarters:** Mountain View, United States
- **Founders:** Stephen Tse (Founder and CEO), Rongjian Lan (Co-founder and CTO (historical)), Alok Kothari (Co-founder (early founding team)), Nicolas Burtey (Co-founder (early founding team)), Minh Doan (Co-founder (early founding team)), Nick White (Co-founder (historical)), Sahil Dewan (Co-founder (historical))
- **Products:** Harmony blockchain, ONE, Horizon bridge, Open-source developer and validator tools, The Remix Economy for AI Video
- **Notable:** Launched sharded mainnet in June 2019., Announced production two-second block time and transaction finality in December 2020., Released protocol code publicly and maintained a public technical documentation and release history.

## Products & services

- **Harmony blockchain** — Historically an EVM-compatible Layer 1 using state sharding, Fast BFT consensus and Effective Proof-of-Stake; mainnet launched in June 2019. A September 2026 proposal calls for its retirement.
- **ONE** — Native token historically used for gas, staking and governance. The team proposed issuing a replacement ERC-20 token on Ethereum in September 2026.
- **Horizon bridge** — Historical cross-chain asset bridge linking Harmony with Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain; compromised in June 2022. Do not present as an unqualified current secure service.
- **Open-source developer and validator tools** — Protocol source, documentation, node software, staking resources and Ethereum-compatible development interfaces.
- **The Remix Economy for AI Video** — Current positioning and proposed creator/operator ecosystem built around shared prompts, assets, fan remixes and agent-generated videos; commercial scale is not verified.

## Achievements

- Launched sharded mainnet in June 2019.
- Announced production two-second block time and transaction finality in December 2020.
- Released protocol code publicly and maintained a public technical documentation and release history.
- Raised approximately $18.3 million privately and approximately $5 million through a public token sale.

## Latest updates

- **2026-01** — January engineering update, published February 3, described Harmony VM alignment with newer Ethereum EIPs, cross-shard receipt fixes and hedging/backtesting work.
- **2026-08** — Harmony acknowledged another exploit and discussed a patch, exchange freezes and rollback options. Early reports of four billion unauthorized ONE were later revised in reporting; no single unqualified mint total is used here.
- **2026-09** — Announced a proposal to sunset its Layer 1, migrate ONE to Ethereum and redirect activity toward an AI video remix economy. Reporting described the proposal as non-binding; completion is not asserted.
